As the world continues to experience disruption at every scale, there is growing recognition that disaster is not a distant or isolated event—it is a shared human experience. Communities and individuals alike are navigating crisis, recovery, and the ongoing work of resilience.

While many people overlook disaster preparedness, I have been drawn to the study of hazards since childhood and built a career in emergency management. My work has centered on helping organizations plan for the unexpected and guiding communities through response and recovery. But at 26 years old, I was thrust into a disaster of my own. Following emergency surgery, I was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and forced to confront crisis on a deeply personal level.

That experience reshaped the way I understand disaster.

The Anatomy of Resilience explores the shared arc that connects large-scale catastrophes and personal crises. Drawing on my perspective as both an emergency manager and a cancer survivor, the book examines how disruption unfolds and how we navigate its phases—from the initial shock of Nightfall, through the uncertainty of Midnight, and toward the emergence of Dawn.

This is not a traditional preparedness guide, nor is it a conventional memoir. Instead, it offers a human-centered framework for understanding what happens within crisis: how we interpret warning signs, how our sense of time shifts, and how connection and meaning shape recovery.

Blending professional insight with lived experience, The Anatomy of Resilience provides a way to orient yourself in the midst of uncertainty. Whether facing illness, community disaster, organizational disruption, or personal loss, this book offers a lens for understanding where you are in the process—and how resilience can be created, embodied, and shared.
